Alex was thirteen years old
when she moved into her new home, her tenth home so far. A normal house in the
town called Hillock was where she stayed because of her mother’s job, Mary.
Mary was a single-handed mother who loved her job and her daughter so much.
Even though she’s always busy with her work, she never forgot to fulfil her duty
as a mother. She was Alex’s one and only soulmate. She listened to her problems
and never failed to cheer her up.
Hillock, a town filled with
normal people and shops like the towns she stayed before. The only speciality
that Hillock got was the very close-up hills surrounding the town. There’s one
hill that captured Alex’s interest. The one that was near her house. She could
see the top of the hill at her backyard. The thought of wanting to go there
engulfed her mind. However, she could see her mother staring at her as in
telling her she did not permit her current thought. Knowing her mother, she
understood and erased the thought quickly.
As soon as Alex finished
arranging her belongings in her new room, she went to greet the neighbour next
to their house along with her mother. It was a tradition for them every time
they moved to a new town. The purpose was to build a good relationship while
they were still there. For Mary, it was to assure her daughter’s safety while
she was away for job matters. Alex’s safety living alone in the house even if she
was away for only 1 hour worried her a lot.
The neighbour next to their
house was the family of Coopers. In Alex’s point of view, they were friendly
but a bit weird. Their smiles creeped Alex out. But she thought it was alright
since her mother looked comfortable. Accompanied by the stairs’ creaking sound,
the daughter of the Coopers, Selena Cooper went down from the second floor. ‘She
looked normal compared to her parents’ was what Alex taught the first time they
made eye contact. She seemed around her age and it turned out she went to the
school Alex was about to join the next day.
The new school looked warm
but not as warm as the people there. The first time Alex stepped in her class
was yesterday. She remembered all the gazes she received from her classmates.
They were cold. The only warm gazes were from her homeroom teacher and Selena
Cooper. It was almost 1 week since Alex moved to Hillock. Selena had become
Alex’s bestie or most likely second soulmate after her mother. Even though they
only knew each other for a week, they had similar opinions whenever they talked
about something. Feeling comfortable around her, Alex shared a lot of things like
she used to tell her mother.
After school, Mary was away
from home for half of the day. Selena accompanied Alex. This was the first time
Alex told Mary that a friend will be visiting their house for the past ten
times they moved. She remembered her mother’s excited face when she told Selena
was accompanying her at home while she was gone. The reason was simple. Alex
had never brought a friend home since little because of the moving. She never
developed any deeper relationship towards someone else beside her mother. She
knew the feeling of letting go without her willing was painful.
As Alex and Selena was
having a conversation at the backyard, Selena noticed the hill near Alex’s
house. She proposed to go to the hill. She looked eager to go. Alex knew how
she felt. It’s like the hill was calling for her as soon as she saw it. That
described how captivating the hill was. However, recalling her mother’s gaze stopped
her from doing so. It was dangerous to go there. She never once did what her
mother dislike and she will never do that.
Disappointed with Alex’s
reaction, they had an argument. Both of them defending their thoughts was like
splashing water at each other’s face. Realising there was no end to their
argument, Alex told Selena to go home. It will be better if they cooled
themselves down first. Suddenly, Selena who was dissatisfied with the solution
ran through the small pathway behind Alex’s house. The pathway that brought her
to the hill. Alex was shocked. What she could do was ran after her and brought
her back.
Unfortunately, she was not
able to fetch her. She kept on running after her until they reached the top
where Selena finally stopped running. Alex convinced Selena to go back to the
house with her because it was getting dark. The sun was setting. It was creepy.
All Alex could think was going back to the house. She felt like someone was
pulling her from leaving the hill. She turned around to see the surrounding.
When she turned back towards Selena, she was gone.
Alex had goosebumps. She
felt something was not right. She kept calling out for Selena but there was no
response. There was also no sight of Selena at all. Feeling uneasy, Alex
quickly ran down the hill. It was odd that she kept seeing the same trees even
though she already ran pass those trees before. She was certain she took the
same pathway like before. However, she cannot find her house. Alex started to
panic. She sat down at the ground. Her head went down as she was scared.
Suddenly, she felt someone
hugging her. When she raised her head, tears burst out. It was her mother who
hugged her. Alex could see her worried face. Mary was searching for Alex right
after she found out Alex was not at home. Of course, she felt angry with Alex’s
action but she felt relieved as soon as she found her. Her daughter’s safety
mattered the most after all. They went down together. Alex told her mother what
happened and suddenly the house’s bell rang.
Mr. Cooper and her wife
came. They looked fidgety. The reason was because they came to tell the truth.
Selena Cooper was actually dead few years ago. She loved playing at the hill
near Alex’s house. One day, she did not return home from the hill. They found
her stiff and cold body lied at the top of the hill. It was the spot where Alex
faced the hassle. No one knew the cause. It was simplified as a sudden
death.
The people in Alex’s house
always saw Selena wondered around and thought she was a living body. They told
while crying maybe it was because of her lonely soul wanting to make friends.
Selena was always alone at home because of her parents were busy with their
jobs and she had no friends during that moment. Now, they regretted their
action and they quitted their jobs.
A few days later, Mary and
Alex moved out from the house. However, this time it was not because of her
mother’s job but it was because of the incident.
